Graduate School of Economics Introduction

The Graduate School of Economics in the University of Toyama offers two Master's degree programs, in "Regional and Economic Policy" and "Business Administration." The goal of these programs is to nurture businesspersons with high level of expertise as well as researchers in Economics, Business Administration, and Business Laws. Research themes of graduate students include regional life and activities, industry and business, theories of public policies, comparative study on policies, strategies of enterprises, data processing, and economic regulations and laws. As of March 2018, the Graduate School of Economics conferred more than 400 Master of Economics or Business Administration degrees.

Graduate School Outline

As a day/evening course system is adopted, working student can complete the Master's degree programs.

The main goals of this Graduate School are to re-train working people, such as business persons, public officers, and teachers, and to enable university graduates to acquire highly specialized skills and broad knowledge. To achieve these goals, the day/evening course system is adopted. Those who work during the day can complete the Master's degree programs without quitting their current jobs by attending classes and receiving research guidance in the evening. The evening class hours are from 18:10 to 21:20.

Exemptions of Admission and Tuition Fees, and other financial support

(1) Exemptions of Admission and Tuition Fees

Students who have difficulties paying the admission and tuition fees are eligible to apply for exemptions of admission and tuition fees, which can be either full or half amount. After the submission of an application, submitted documents undergo screening to evaluate the applicant's eligibility.

(2) Scholarships (loan)

Students who demonstrate excellent academic achievements, have good personality and health, and are recognized to need a financial support (either scholarship or educational loan) are eligible to apply for the financial support to the Japan's Student Services Organization. Submitted applications are screened to evaluate the eligibility of applicants to receive the financial support.

(3) Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants (TA) are selected from applying graduate students and are engaged in educational assistance in classes at the undergraduate level. By working as a TA, you can receive not only good training to become a teacher or researcher, but also earn salary that provides extra financial assistance.

We place emphasis on multidisciplinary, comprehensive and practical education in the fields of social sciences such as economics, business administration, and business law.

The Graduate School is characterized by a comprehensive and multidisciplinary education and research in economics, business administration, and law, which are major fields of social sciences. This allows students to respond to the rapid progress of information and globalization in the economy. In designing curriculum, we have increased practical subjects on how to solve actual problems in many different. In addition, we developed courses that take into account new fields of knowledge.

School Transfer System for working students of 12 university graduate schools of the National University Corporation

In 2003, 12 university graduate schools of the National University Corporation (See the note.) adopted the Agreement on School Transfer among 12 Graduate Schools of Economics / Business Administration of the National University Corporation. This allows working graduate students in those graduate schools to transfer to our Graduate School when they move to our area due to job change or company transfer. In this case, they don't have to pay any entrance examination fee or admission fee.

Graduate Student Admission Policy

In today's economic society, problems to be solved emerge one after another, with increased complexity.
In light of the current situation, it is considered essential to acquire advanced and systematic knowledge and a broad view that enables to respond to various situations, not to input bits of information and knowledge.

From this viewpoint, the Graduate School hopes to admit students and working people, both from Japan and abroad, who:

  1. Are strongly interested in economics, business administration, and business law, and are eager to obtain specialized knowledge and practical skills to make them useful for communities and education.
  2. Are eager to logically and empirically study and solve challenges which our modern society faces by utilizing their new knowledge.
  3. Hope to develop a broad viewpoint through active communications with a variety of people studying economics, business administration, and business law.
  4. Have a strong aspirations to continue to study and research, and wish to achieve unique theoretical and empirical research results.

More specifically, we hope to accept applicants who hope to:

  1. Take leadership positions in enterprises in Japan and Asia
  2. Play important roles in society by becoming licensed tax accountants, etc.
  3. Work as local government officials in charge of policies
  4. Utilize advanced knowledge acquired at our Graduate School in education, research, and practical business.

Master's Degree Conferment Policy

The School confers Master's degree in Economics (major in Regional and Economic Policy) or Master's degree in Business Administration (major in Business Administration) to graduate students who have successfully completed the program work, earned the required credits, received research guidance, and passed the master's thesis and the final examinations. Master's degree holders who completed this master's program possess the following capacities.

Creativity

Based on the comprehensive and multidisciplinary knowledge obtained in the undergraduate program, they have acquired more advanced and specialized knowledge in economics, business administration, and law, and logical thinking, with which they can discover, analyze and address various challenges in the complicated and quickly changing modern economies.

Responsibility

Through their research activities, they have developed an awareness of their responsibility within an organization, learned to act with clear awareness of their roles in their specialized fields, and can contribute to society by exercising leaderships with a sense of responsibility.

Communication capability

They will enhance their communication capabilities through communications over specialized knowledge and results gained through their research that allows them to engage in discussions with advanced logical content.

Broad knowledge

They can contribute to the solving of complex and diverse problems that the modern society faces by acquiring broad knowledge and education in related fields based on specialized knowledge in their study fields.

Specialized knowledge

They can solve various problems in this modern society by acquiring sophisticated and practical knowledge in their research fields along with the capability to accomplish their research by utilizing the knowledge they have obtained.

Degree Conferment Policy of Master's degree program in Regional and Economic Policy

Master's degree in Economics is conferred to graduate students of master's degree program in Regional and Economic Policy who have successfully finished the program work, earned the required credits, received research guidance and passed the master's thesis and the final examination. Master's degree holders who completed this master's program possess the following capacities.

Creativity

Based on their issue awareness, they can scientifically analyze the structure of social issues by applying their knowledge in economics, sociology and business law, and who can create solutions to those problems.

Responsibility

In pursuance of research, they have fostered their social responsibility and can make responsible statements as an expert.

Communication capability

They have developed communication capability through a lot of active and specialized discussions with teachers and fellow students, and can develop an objective and logical argument.

Broad knowledge

They can have extensive views and specialized knowledge by conducting field work and literature review, which are main research methodologies in economics, sociology, and business law, based on their specialized knowledge in their research fields.

Specialized knowledge

They can contribute to the society by acquiring specialized knowledge which is essential for solving a variety of problems dealt in economics, sociology, and business law.

Degree Conferment Policy of Master's degree program in Business Administration

Master's degree in Business Administration is conferred to graduate students of the master's degree program in Business Administration who have successfully finished the program work, earned the required credits, received research guidance and passed the master's thesis and the final examinations. Master's degree holders who completed this program possess the following capacities.

Creativity

With the advanced knowledge of business administration, accounting, commerce, and law, and knowledge of leading research studies on these topics, they can discover and analyze problems of various social fields and create solutions to those problems.

Responsibility

In order to build a sustainable society, they can act with awareness of their roles in conducting business and solving problems, and they can contribute to the society, as well as acting responsibly, by exercising their leadership.

Communication capability

While cultivating management ability and legal mind, they have worked on cutting-edge research in collaboration with others. They can convey specialized knowledge with proper methods and make regional and international contributions.

Broad knowledge

Based on the knowledge and thinking capabilities, acquired through specialized studies in business administration, accounting, commerce, and law, they can work hard for advancing their knowledge for solving various problems, and utilize their broad views and general education in society as professionals who contribute to sustainable social growth.

  1. In seminars, under a tutor's guidance, students acquire methodologies, such as document retrieval and fieldwork, which are necessary for research study, and enhance their capability to conduct specialized research.
  2. In specialized research, students choose subjects suitable for their research projects and acquire specialized multi-disciplinary knowledge and research ability, as well as a basic knowledge of economics, sociology, and law.
  3. Under the tutor's guidance, students compile their research results as a thesis.
  4. Students must earn required credits and submit a Master's thesis. The thesis is strictly examined and, if found satisfactory, the Master's degree in Economics is conferred.
